Cost of baking a Victoria Sponge cake rises… we’ve got just the solution

A recent news article has revealed how rising costs of living have cranked the price of a Victoria Sponge cake up to £13.50! Meaning it’s now drastically cheaper to bake a cake yourself or to make life easier, simply using one of our baking mixes.

We’ve rounded up our favourite bakes and ranked them by price below. Each one costs just £10.99 and can be purchased right here. We’ve also included the cost for those extra little ingredients (which you’ll most likely have in the cupboard already)

Cost of baking Vegan Chocolate & Walnut Brownies (Makes 12 brownies)

These rich Belgian dark chocolate and walnut brownies are notorious for their moistness and best of all, they’re vegan too (check out our vegan range). The only other ingredients you’ll need are:

• 100ml vegetable oil (Morrisons Vegetable Oil £2.49 £1.75 (£0.18 per 100ml))
• 200ml water (FREE!)

Costing £11.17 in total, that’s just 93p per brownie… Take that viccy sponge!

Cost of baking Seriously Smart Cookies (Makes 22 cookies)

These crunchy, colour-bursting cookie mixes are a firm family favourite amongst our Bottled Bakers. Simply squish the ingredients together and bung ‘em in the oven. Speaking of ingredients, these are those little added extras…

• 1 large egg (Sainsbury's Woodland Free Range Large Eggs £1.50 (0.25 per egg))
• 170g butter (Sainsbury's British Butter Unsalted 250g £1.99 (£1.36 per 170g))

That's £12.60 for 22 cookies, 57p a cookie is a pretty good bargain if you ask us! 

Cost of baking Un-BEE-lievable Choco-Honey Cookies (Makes 22 cookies)

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, or perhaps know someone who does - these honey cookies could be the perfect baking gift that’ll make their day that little bit sweeter. You could even make your gift into a mini hamper by adding those extra ingredients, these will cost:

• 1 large egg (Sainsbury's Woodland Free Range Large Eggs £1.50 (0.25 per egg))
• 170g butter (Sainsbury's British Butter Unsalted 250g £1.99 (£1.36 per 170g))
• 50ml milk (Tesco British Semi Skimmed Milk 4PTS £1.55 (£0.04 per 50ml))

That’s £12.64 for these 22 cookies and if you really want to get them gooey…

*Optional 1-2 tablespoons of honey (Rowse Runny Honey 340g £2.00 (£0.18 per 30g))

Only £12.82 now, each cookie costing 58p (Just 1p more than our Seriously Smart cookies).

Cost of baking Fabulous Unicorn Cake (Makes 12 slices or cupcakes)

Probably the closest mix to the classic Victoria Sponge, our Fabulous Unicorn Cake is versatile too! Either make a large cake to share or instead some smaller cupcakes to dish out. To finish off the mix, simply add:

• 60ml milk (Tesco British Semi Skimmed Milk 4PTS £1.55 (£0.04 per 60ml))
• 150g softened butter (Sainsbury's British Butter Unsalted 250g £1.99 (£1.20 per 150g))
• 3 large eggs (Sainsbury's Woodland Free Range Large Eggs £1.50 (£0.75 for 3 eggs))
• 50ml vegetable oil (Morrisons Vegetable Oil £2.49 £1.75 (£0.09 per 50ml))

In total that’ll cost you £13.07 for 12 slices (or cupcakes for that matter). Not only is that cheaper than the cost of baking a Victoria Sponge Cake but (controversial opinion incoming) it’s a whole lot more exciting too. 

Cost of baking Extravagant Gingerbread Brownies (Makes 12 brownies)

Christmas is on the horizon… ‘tis the season for gingerbread and what a way to do so with the Extravagant Gingerbread Brownie Mix. Sticky, fudgy and slightly spiced - this is bottled comfort right here. Simply add:
